The José Antonio Llorente Foundation held a new meeting of the “Transformative Conversations” series, which addressed cyberbullying and its impact on young people’s mental health.
The event offered a broad and detailed view of this reality, as it was approached from completely different but highly complementary perspectives that help to understand its dimension and scope.
Lara Contreras, Director of Influence, Programs, and Partnerships at UNICEF Spain, began by presenting her initiative “NTP: Coméntalo” (NTP: Talk About It), a movement in support of young people’s mental health that seeks to inspire youth to make their realities visible, raise their voices, and support children and adolescents.
In addition, Sonsoles Romero, a 19-year-old member of the UNICEF Spain Advisory Group, offered the youth perspective on cyberbullying, safety in digital spaces, mental health awareness, and how these issues are addressed.
On the other hand, Diana Diaz from the ANAR Foundation shared data on cases of cyberbullying victims that the organization has dealt with, helping to quantify the impact. She also explained the keys to supporting and helping young people who experience cyberbullying, how to detect it, and advice for parents.
For our part, we learned about the legal framework of digital rights, the reporting mechanisms that exist, and how to detect situations in which online harassment begins to constitute a crime. All this was presented by Inés Puig-Samper, patron of the Fernando Pombo Foundation and lawyer at Gomez-Acebo & Pombo.
This meeting serves to include all the components that make up cyberbullying in the debate, emphasize the importance of each one, and take them into account in order to continue promoting the proper use of technology by young people.
